Same class of issue with a third-party model: the desktop app renders the full middle section — expandable reasoning summary + tool call activity — but the same thread viewed through ChatGPT mobile remote (iOS) shows only a flattened thinking cell, with no expandable reasoning or tool-call middle steps, even though desktop has them. Reproduced with an existing desktop-created thread continued from mobile (not a mobile-created thread).

Related cluster: #31370 (mobile-created threads fall back to model_provider=openai instead of the host custom provider), #32185 (iOS remote thinking rendering), #23250 (mobile reasoning expansion behavior), #36640 (active model/reasoning effort not exposed to mobile), lidge-jun/opencodex#45 (desktop-side 'Worked for Xs shows time but no trace' for routed models). The remote surface appears to be dropping or mis-rendering the same summary/tool items that desktop renders fine.

Pinning the remote-settled-view mechanism with a live data point (2026-08-12): the missing middle is not a data-loss issue — it's a client view-selection issue, and it equally affects native OpenAI-model threads (this is not specific to custom providers).

What fixes it is not better data delivery but forcing the client onto its full read path:

The settled view is thread/resume with turns at itemsView:"summary" — per turn, only the user message + final answer render. All reasoning/tool items exist in the rollout and in the "full" view, but the client never requests them on the summary path.
The remote client does have a full path: thread/turns/list. Verified today against a settled 141-item thread — full items resumed with 0 parse errors. It fires when the client fully re-opens the thread.
A fresh native gpt-5.6 thread from a desktop-created conversation flattens identically on ChatGPT remote (iOS): traces and tool use visible during the run, then no expand button after the final answer. Leaving the thread and reopening makes the middle reappear — the phone re-fetches the settled thread and re-materializes with the full view.

So the bug is not "remote lacks the data" — it's "remote defaults to the summary view and inconsistently falls back to the full view". A fix on the client side (always use the full view for settled threads, or default-expandable "Worked for Xs" that issues thread/turns/list on demand) would resolve this across both native and custom-provider threads.
