What issue are you seeing?

Codex CLI repeatedly interrupts active agent turns with a transport failure.

The typical error is:

Falling back from WebSockets to HTTPS transport. stream disconnected before completion: WebSocket protocol error: Connection reset without closing handshake

This is not limited to one damaged thread. I have reproduced the failure in resumed sessions and fresh Codex sessions.

When the WebSocket connection fails, Codex reports that it is falling back to HTTPS, but the current agent turn still terminates with:

Conversation interrupted - tell the model what to do differently.

This makes long-running coding/debugging tasks unreliable because Codex may successfully perform multiple tool calls, edit/test files, and analyze results, then lose the active turn before completion.

Local diagnostics do not show an obvious connectivity failure:

• No proxy environment variables are configured.
• UFW is inactive.
• codex doctor --json reports that the Responses WebSocket handshake succeeds with HTTP 101 Switching Protocols.
• A direct IPv4 HTTPS request to https://chatgpt.com/backend-api/ returns in approximately 69 ms:

• DNS: 0.002 s
• connect: 0.005 s
• TLS: 0.061 s
• first response: 0.069 s
• total: 0.069 s
• The HTTP status from unauthenticated curl is 403, but the endpoint is reached immediately.
• Codex installation, authentication, configuration, state databases, and WebSocket handshake all pass codex doctor.
• The only failing doctor check is network.provider_reachability, which reports the ChatGPT base URL timing out after approximately 3.1 seconds despite the direct curl request completing in approximately 69 ms.

Additionally, Codex reports both responses_websockets and responses_websockets_v2 feature flags as removed, so I have not found a supported way to force the built-in OpenAI provider to use HTTP instead of WebSockets.

I am reporting this because the WebSocket failure itself may be recoverable, but the advertised HTTPS fallback does not appear to recover the active Codex turn.

What is the expected behavior?

Start Codex CLI 0.147.0 on Ubuntu:
codex --yolo
Use gpt-5.6-sol.
Open a normal development repository and give Codex a task requiring multiple tool calls, tests, file inspection, or other continued agent work.
Allow the agent to work normally.
During an active turn, Codex eventually reports a transport error similar to:
WebSocket protocol error: Connection reset without closing handshake
Codex then reports:
Falling back from WebSockets to HTTPS transport
Instead of continuing the same turn over HTTPS, Codex terminates it with:
Conversation interrupted - tell the model what to do differently.
Attempting to continue/resume does not reliably solve the problem. The failure has occurred across resumed and fresh sessions.

If the WebSocket transport is interrupted and Codex successfully falls back to HTTPS, the active agent turn should continue through the fallback transport rather than terminating the conversation.

A transient transport failure should not repeatedly make an otherwise healthy Codex CLI session unusable, particularly when authentication, installation, state databases, basic HTTPS connectivity, and the initial WebSocket handshake are all functioning.
