Summary

After a recent Codex Desktop update on Windows, Codex has become effectively unusable.

When I send a task, the interface stays on “Thinking” indefinitely.

It does not show:

  • Ran command
  • Read file
  • Modified file
  • tool activity
  • final response

More importantly, even when the task has already completed in the background, the completed result does not appear in the UI.

The only way I can see the completed result is to completely close Codex Desktop and reopen it.

This means I would have to restart Codex after almost every task, which makes the app unusable for normal work.

Reproduction

  1. Open Codex Desktop on Windows.
  2. Send a normal task.
  3. The UI remains on Thinking.
  4. No execution progress or final result appears.
  5. Switching to another thread/project and returning does not fix it.
  6. Wait long enough for the task to complete in the background.
  7. The UI still remains stuck.
  8. Completely close Codex Desktop.
  9. Reopen it.
  10. The completed result is now visible.

The same behavior repeats on the next task.

Expected behavior

Codex should:

  • show live execution progress;
  • finish the turn normally;
  • display the final response without requiring an app restart.

Actual behavior

The backend appears to complete the task, but the Windows desktop UI remains stuck in the active Thinking state and never presents the completed turn until the application is restarted.

This is not only a missing progress indicator. It prevents normal use of Codex Desktop.

Impact

I am a paid ChatGPT pro user and use Codex Desktop for ongoing production work.

Because every task may require a full application restart before the result becomes visible, I currently cannot use Codex Desktop reliably.

For long-running or expensive tasks, I also cannot determine whether:

  • the task is still running;
  • it has finished;
  • it has failed;
  • it is going in the wrong direction.

Environment

  • Product: Codex Desktop
  • Platform: Windows
  • Issue started after a recent Codex Desktop update
  • Reproduces across multiple turns
  • Switching threads/projects does not resolve it
  • Closing and reopening the app reveals the completed result

Please treat this as a Windows Desktop turn-state / UI synchronization regression, not merely a missing progress-animation issue.

What steps can reproduce the bug?

when i give any new task

What is the expected behavior?

its only showing thinking , never show response or answer , or progress , but when i shut it down and reopen , the task is done . its unworkable
