An official Codex extension for JetBrains IDEs—especially PyCharm and IntelliJ IDE, that brings Codex CLI’s capabilities into the JetBrains ecosystem.
Why is this feature important?
JetBrains IDEs are widely used by Python and full-stack developers for their powerful debugging, refactoring, and version control integrations. While Codex CLI and VS Code support are great, many developers rely on JetBrains tools daily. A native extension would make Codex more accessible and useful across a broader range of workflows.

I’d love to be involved in building this, though I likely wouldn’t have the bandwidth to fully own it myself. If someone else is interested in spearheading the effort, I’d be glad to support however I can, whether that’s contributing code, reviewing PRs, or helping shape the design.
Additional information
Even a minimal MVP—such as terminal and commit message integration—would be a huge win for JetBrains users. This could also pave the way for deeper IDE-native workflows powered by Codex.

I have been building a Visual Studio 22 and Jetbrains extensions that are 1to1 parity with the VS Code extension with the added abilities of VS22 like building etc and same with Jetbrains. If you want I would be more than happy to invite you to the repos (keeping them private until ready to release to OAI) and you can help me out with them if you'd like. I was hoping to have them released this week but IRL slowed me down and now its looking like it will be next week or maybe end of this weekend.

Just click the claude code plugin button in Pycharm, and run codex in the terminal, lol.
@EpicWatermelon Personally, I pay for Chat GPT, but I don't pay for Claude. Sure, we could use the free credits, but they wouldn't share the same context. I already use Junie through my company, but I've found that Codex is better.
Using Codex in the IDE similar to the way Junie is utilized is definitely the best case.
@sundayj i might have v1 available for testing late tonight. There's still some things I need to do like add the codex icon etc and get the licensing up to where it's supposed to be but I got a ton done last night/early am today. When I get home in about a hour I'll start working on it again if you have some free time tonight to connect in a call I want to hear your thoughts on implementation and feature set. Since the jetbrains extension is ahead of the visual studio 22 extension that is the one I'm focusing more effort on right now so I can get it out there and start having people test. Ideally once the extensions are stable I want to just pass the source and maintenance to the codex team unless they wanna hire me lol... I've also simultaneously been working on my fork bringing stability to windows clients but more on that later.
@cpjet64 Wow, sounds like you've got a lot done! I'm on the east coast USA and I'm going to be putting my kids to bed soon. I wouldn't be able to talk on a phone call, tonight, but I do plan to look at the code tonight before I go to bed.
Same here US East coast and also putting kids to bed. I'll be home in about 30 minutes take a shower put the kids to bed and then I'll make sure I push everything that hasn't been pushed yet so you can see the latest work. Your input is going to be invaluable since I only use pycharm so I can't really speak to the other IDEs and what should be integrated etc. @sundayj
This would be pretty awesome, thinking of switching from Junie to Codex in PHPStorm, but CLI is just not enough comfort.
I have an entire team of Software Engineers waiting for this feature. Codex is the best option we've found.
@JosepSalvat making good solid progress still on the extensions. i put a hold on the vs22 extension because i had several people request jetbrains first. heres a sneak preview of the ugly ui in intellij idea. i have some of the codex integration completed and can chat back and forth with codex already. todo is already completed and functional. I am building both extensions open source if people want to help contribute. I had to take a small break from extension work to focus on my windows support for codex fork since a lot of the issues i was running into with the extensions was because of the poor windows integration. all are available on my github if you want to follow progress.

I'll be following this as well, I've been using Augment Code a lot within PHPstorm. I'm now trying out OpenAI Codex, would love to use it in my IDE of choice but running it in a docker container sucks (regarding the oAuth steps). Currently using VScode, I feel like Codex has real potential.

Just wanted to give a update on the extensions; I had to put extension work on hold since one of the codex teammembers showed interest in my windows platform support work in my windows fork so i have been hard at work separating out code for PRs so we can hopefully get true cross platform support for codex which is a much bigger deal than the extensions. sometime hopefully in the next few days I should be back working on the extensions since i need them too!

The VS22 and Jetbrains are all open source on my github just look at my profile. Not sure if its acceptable here or not to just post the repos... I just finished my work on building out true multi platform support for codex with a platform and shell abstraction layer just waiting on the codex team to tell me what they want to do. I figure ill be back on working on the extensions this week!
my goal is to hopefully open up my favorite agent to as many people as possible while fixing the things that are broken for me also.

Could it be something as simple as in the Claude Code extension? Just send the selected code and the current file to the terminal as context and open a merge window when writing. It would be very powerful and easy to maintain — CLI users would love it ;)
It could be as simple as moving to Zed with Codex via ACP. :-) JetBrains should be writing this extension.

Searched a lot in Marketplace and didn't believe that JetBrains has not developed a plugin for Codex!
Probabely due to conflict of intrests (?!) because they sell their own ai (?!)
Of course it would be a conflict of interest for JetBrains, they have zero or little interest in doing something like that. Since OpenAI developed the extension for VSCode the only reasonable option is if they develop similar extension for JetBrains IDEs (just like GitHub did with Copilot extension); that's the only guarantee the extension will be kept up-to-date with Codex changes.
+1 for Codex extension for JetBrains - would love to see it properly integrated with CLion!
@Kpax7 Jetbrains does not develop plugins for everything and for 3rd-party corporations.

At least based on the current Jetbrains plugin, it is almost identical to the Claude code plugin provided.

Open Terminal > Type 'codex'?Basically, the plugin has a way to be linked to the terminal.
The key features I have identified are as follows.
One thing that's disappointing is that you have to check the comparison of the changes at the terminal, not at intellij.
So the issue with this CLI codex is the context. Context is the most critical thing and the vs code extension does a way better job.

Waiting for this feature as well! I'm using WebStorm, Rider, DataGrip and PHPStorm.
FWIW JetBrains now support Agent Client Protocol (ACP), and there's community interest in VS Code doing the same.
It's early days but it's looking like ACP might be a reasonable long-term approach for Codex to integrate with multiple IDEs.

ZedEditor already maintains a ACP adapter for Codex (https://github.com/zed-industries/codex-acp), It would be really nice if this support is out of the box from OpenAI Codex without any adapter layers.
The reason I press on this is, the current ZedEditor implementation does use a forked codex version which I have not looked deep enough to identify the reasons behind it nor I don't know if that is just for the purpose of serving some compilation dependencies only. But as soon as I see forked versions, it makes me wonder if the fork is kept properly synced with the actual product.
As novice developer when they use codex in ZedEditor any issue that may arise or missing feature in codex will be seen as a pure OpenAICodex issue rather than a problem with this adapter layer.

I wanted to subscribe to Codex, but I noticed that there is no plugin for JetBrains IDEs, so I decided not to. For those of you using Codex with IntelliJ, how do you handle it on a daily basis?
With Claude Code, I can select a file or a specific line of code and it’s automatically taken into context. How do you achieve the same result with Codex in IntelliJ?
It's rarely a concern. Codex runs in the terminal and changes show in the ide.
Same thing with Claude Code which also runs in the terminal but when triggered with IntelliJ we can select a specific line of code and ask to Claude Code a question about that line. How to handle that situation with Codex?
I usually just say "look at file filename_here line line_num_here", but usually I don't need it.
I use the codex-launcher plugin btw for a little more comfort.
I would just ask codex cli the question and include the file name and line number (range) in the text of the question.

Seems very promising, but I saw this on the plugin page:
At the moment only MacOS is supported (but we're actively working on adding support for Windows).That's really bad as I'm on linux.

Nope I am on Windows 😂 and I don’t have a Codex subscription. I wanted to get a subscription for testing but after seeing that we don’t have an official plugin for IntelliJ I didn’t subscribe.
The setup that works best for me is to do my work in PyCharm, but have VS Code open purely for the Codex extension.
You can make the Codex window fill the whole VS Code window with "Maximise secondary sidebar size", so it's basically like having a Codex CLI window, but with good UI/UX.
Yes, there are lots of flaws with this approach, but for me it's the least worst option.

That means you'll see all of the same Codex behaviors and functionality everywhere you use Codex — in your JetBrains IDE, VS Code, Cursor, the terminal, or the cloud.

It does not seem to work with projects that operate from within WSL, anyone has tips for this problem?
Failed to initialize ACP process. Failed to start process: java.io.IOException: Cannot run program "C:\Users\\AppData\Local\JetBrains\PhpStorm2025.3\aia\codex\bin\codex-acp-x64-windows.exe" (in directory "\home\\projects\****"): CreateProcess error=267, The directory name is invalid. Try using absolute path for your executable.
This extension is unusably poor. It freezes the UI constantly churning the CPU. I suggest reopening this issue until something usable is developed.
I'm facing the same problem now, and I turned to use other IDE and simply use pycharm as a "sftp manager with better UI".
Yeah I'm back to the CLI until there's a Windows desktop app, I find both PyCharm and VSCode versions unusable now.
I hope that one day OpenAI will make a company-wide decision to treat Windows as a first class citizen and stop with the Apple-only products.
If you're seeing problems with the JetBrains extension, please report the issue to the JetBrains team using the feedback mechanism in the extension or in their public issue tracker. They've been very responsive for other issues that have been brought to their attention.
@davidgilbertson, you mentioned that you're also seeing issues with the VS Code extension. Please feel free to open bug reports in this issue tracker to report what you're seeing.
