Feature Request: Real-Time Token Counter Next to Time Counter (like Claude Code)

What feature would you like to see?

I would like to see a real-time token counter displayed next to the time counter when Codex is working, similar to how Claude Code implements this feature.

Benefits:

  • Users can see not only how long a task has been running, but also monitor the token output in real-time
  • The dynamically updating token counter provides immediate feedback that Codex is actively working
  • Users can gauge the output speed and performance by tracking tokens per second/minute
  • This helps distinguish between Codex being stuck versus processing large amounts of data

Comparison to Claude Code:
Claude Code displays both elapsed time and a live token counter during code generation, giving users transparency into the AI's activity and progress. This same visibility would greatly improve the Codex user experience.

Additional information

This feature would be particularly valuable for long-running tasks where users need assurance that the system is still processing their request. Having both time and token metrics visible would enhance user confidence and provide actionable performance insights.
