MacOS terminal new line is broken

What issue are you seeing?

When using MacOS native terminal hitting shift command doesn't go to a new line, which is fine, but the usual terminal escape pattern with \ is not working either so I don't have a way of dropping to a new line and I need to use the VSCode terminal.

What steps can reproduce the bug?
