What version of Codex is running?

codex-cli 0.48.0

What subscription do you have?

Every time I start Codex CLI it reports a new version is available. Running codex update completes (or says already up to date), but after restarting the terminal or running Codex again, the update prompt still appears

What platform is your computer?

Darwin 24.6.0 x86_64 i386

What steps can reproduce the bug?

  • Steps to reproduce:
  1. Run codex
  2. Run codex update as prompted
  3. Restart the terminal or run codex again
  4. See the same update prompt

What is the expected behavior?

After a successful update, no further update prompt appears and codex --version matches the latest version indicated by the prompt.

Run npm install -g @openai/codex manually.

Run which -a codex to see your path - you likely have multiple installs of the CLI on your system. Update the correct one

As others have noted, this is probably because you have two copies of the CLI installed on your system.

Were you able to find and remove the second copy?

In my case, it was because of the globally set min-release-age option in the .npmrc file.
